
Wind damage on a Tulsa roof — what's actually happening
Wind damages shingles in three ways, often all at once during the same storm. First, lift: the wind catches the leading edge of a shingle and pulls it upward, breaking the sealant strip that bonds it to the shingle below. Second, creasing: the lifted shingle slams back down, leaving a sharp horizontal crease across the tab — visible from the roof, often invisible from the ground. Third, the catastrophic case: the shingle tears off entirely, exposing the underlayment or bare deck to the next rain.
Lifted-and-recreased shingles are the most insidious wind damage. They look intact from the driveway, but their sealant bond is broken — meaning they're no longer wind-resistant and will lift again at much lower wind speeds. The next 40-mph gust can take a roof that looked fine to the eye. This is why a post-storm inspection matters even when the roof seems undamaged.
Why Tulsa wind damage is different
Oklahoma is one of the windiest states in the country. Average sustained wind speeds in Tulsa run 10–12 mph year-round; gust speeds during severe weather routinely exceed 60 mph and not uncommonly reach 80 mph. The state also leads the nation in tornado frequency per square mile — Tulsa County alone has documented EF-0 through EF-4 tornadoes in modern recordkeeping, with the 2015 Sand Springs EF-2 being the most recent major metro impact.
But tornadoes are rare events. The wind damage we see most often isn't from funnels — it's from the straight-line winds that surround severe thunderstorm systems. - Walk every slope visually.Lifted, missing, and creased shingles are visible from the roof — but only from the roof. The lifted-corner test (gently pulling on each shingle's leading edge) reveals shingles whose sealant has failed.
- Check the flashing and ridge caps. Wind often damages ridge caps (the cap shingles along the peak) and flashing (around chimneys, pipes, valleys) before it tears off field shingles. These are higher-value damage points a quick look from the ground misses.
- Inspect the underlayment. Where shingles are missing, the felt or synthetic underlayment may be torn or ballooned. Damaged underlayment requires replacement even if shingles can be patched over it.
- Look at fasteners. Improperly driven nails (high nails) are a common wind-damage amplifier. We document fastener issues because they affect both the replacement scope and the warranty.
- Document collateral. Wind tears off gutters, fascia trim, vent caps, satellite dishes, and (sometimes) chunks of siding. All of it goes in the damage documentation.
- Drone documentation. Aerial footage shows wind damage patterns over the full roof. Drone documentation is reproducible and contextual, so the record holds up.
Signs of wind damage you should know
- Lifted shingles. Corners curled or peaked. Often subtle from the ground; obvious from the roof.
- Missing shingles. Bare spots showing felt or deck. Obvious and urgent.
- Creased shingles. A sharp horizontal line across the tab where the shingle bent. Indicates the sealant broke.
- Torn or missing flashing. Around chimneys, pipes, skylights, valleys. Flashing failures cause leaks even when shingles look fine.
- Damaged ridge caps. The cap row along the peak. Often the first to fail in high wind.
- Granule loss on driveway or in gutters.Wind doesn't cause granule loss directly, but wind plus debris (small twigs, sand) can shed granules at scale.
- Shingle pieces in the yard. Sometimes the only ground-level signal that something happened up top.

Wind damage roof replacement costs depend on scope. A single-slope tear-off and replacement (because matching aged shingles is nearly impossible) runs $3,000–$6,000. Full-roof replacement on wind damage that affects multiple slopes runs $9,000–$16,000, identical to hail-driven replacement — and it's the most common outcome, because wind rarely confines itself to one slope on an aged roof.

One thing consistently drives wind projects toward full-slope replacement: matching. When shingles can't be color-matched across slopes — because the original line is discontinued or too weathered — replacing the full slope is usually the only way to keep the roof uniform and watertight. A visible patch in mismatched shingles rarely seals as well as the original, either.
