Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Tulsa: What They Cost and Who They're For

What The Rating Actually Measures
Class 4 comes from UL 2218, a standardised impact test. A two-inch steel ball is dropped onto the shingle from roughly 20 feet, twice, in the same place. The shingle is then examined from the back. If the mat — the reinforcing layer that holds everything together — shows no cracking, it passes.
Classes 1, 2 and 3 use progressively smaller balls from lower heights. Class 4 is the only one that involves the two-inch impact, which is why it is the only rating anyone in Green Country talks about.
Note what the test does not measure: granule loss, cosmetic marking, or performance under wind-driven hail arriving at an angle. It is a mat-fracture test. That distinction matters, because mat fracture is what turns a bruised shingle into a leaking roof.
The Two Ways Manufacturers Get There
SBS-modified asphalt. Styrene-butadiene- styrene is a rubberised polymer blended into the asphalt. It makes the shingle flexible enough to absorb an impact and return to shape rather than fracturing — think of the difference between hitting a hockey puck and hitting a rubber ball. SBS products also stay pliable in cold weather, which matters in a January Tulsa cold snap.
Heavier mat and reinforcement. Other products reach Class 4 through added weight, a stronger fibreglass mat, or a polymer backing layer. These pass the same test, but they generally do not carry the cold-weather flexibility benefit that SBS does.

The Cost, Honestly

Questions To Ask Before You Sign
- Which specific product line, and is it SBS-modified or reinforced-mat?
- Is the UL 2218 Class 4 rating written into the contract?
